The Bill Stewart Trio, featuring double bassist Larry Grenadier, saxophonist Walter Smith III, and of course the band's namesake on drums, is an absolutely top-notch jazz combo. Bill Stewart has been a highly sought-after drummer for over thirty years. The New York Times praised his ability to "make a good band sound inexplicably better." He has played with John Scofield, Pat Metheny, and Maceo Parker, among others. Bassist Larry Grenadier, in turn, was praised as "highly intuitive" and worked for decades with Brad Mehldau, Paul Motian, and Pat Metheny. Tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III developed under the tutelage of greats like Roy Haynes, Terence Blanchard, and Christian McBride. On their album, "Band Menu," they demonstrate a pared-down, melodically rich approach without chordal instruments. And that gives drummer Stewart plenty of room. This trio demonstrates why they sold out two weeks at New York's legendary Village Vanguard.
